The Right Way to Run a Winch Recovery
Running wire rope directly around a tree trunk damages the bark, cuts into the cambium layer, and can kill the tree. More importantly, it's a rigging failure waiting to happen. The GearAmerica Tree Saver Strap is the piece between your winch line and your anchor that keeps the tree alive, the load properly distributed, and your recovery rigged the way it's supposed to be. At 3" × 8' with a 35,053 lb Minimum Breaking Strength and 12,000 lb Working Load Limit, it handles winch-level tension that would snap lesser straps.
Three Ways to Use One Strap
Most people reach for it as a tree saver, and it is that, and more.
- Tree saver / anchor wrap — loop it around a tree trunk, connect the ends with a soft shackle or D-ring/clevis, and hook your winch line in. The adjustable neoprene sleeves protect the bark; the military-grade polyester webbing handles the load. Preserving the tree preserves the trail.
- Winch extension strap — when your winch rope won't reach the anchor point, this extends your pull distance without sacrificing rated capacity. Connect end-to-end and pull.
- Y-strap bridle — thread it through the loop of a tow strap and center it, then attach each reinforced end loop to a separate recovery point on your vehicle. The Y formation distributes shock load across two points instead of one, protecting your frame-mounted recovery hardware during a hard extraction.
Built for the Forces a Winch Produces
The 8-foot length wraps cleanly around the base of most trees with room to position both loops for shackle connection. Two movable neoprene sleeves slide to wherever the webbing contacts the bark, protecting both the tree and the strap at the friction point. Military-grade polyester is UV, moisture, and wear resistant with less than 7% elongation — the controlled, predictable stretch profile that winch recoveries demand. This is not the strap for a nylon snatch setup. It is built specifically to handle sustained winch tension without creep or catastrophic failure.
Comes with an oversized storage bag and velcro tie — stow it in your recovery kit alongside your tow straps, D-rings, and shackles so everything travels together. Backed by GearAmerica's Lifetime Hassle-Free Replacement Warranty.
